Summer Day Program

Sign up for one or multiple weeks of educational fun with Engelmann Mountain School in Big Cottonwood Canyon! Each week is limited to 10 participants. Registration is first come first serve. A waitlist will be available.

June 6-10 Water Week! Everything is melting. Come learn how the canyon acts as a watershed for the whole Salt Lake City Valley. Do experiments, explore the mountains and water, and search for animals as the water starts to run! Cottonwood Canyons Foundation will help guide a great activity at Silverlake too! Monday-Thursday 8:30-3 and Friday 8:30-12:30

June 13-17 Everything small! It’s that time of year when the buds start to pop, bugs start to hop, and for all sorts of amazing things to happen right below your nose! Don’t let it pass you by! Get down low to see, smell, and hear the sounds of spring. Cottonwood Canyons Foundation will help guide a great activity at Silverlake to dredge the water and find all sorts of exciting critters! Monday-Thursday 8:30-3 and Friday 8:30-12:30

June 20-24 Bird Week! Have you ever heard a red-tailed hawk cry or seen a rufous hummingbird battle for territory? Come see the birds of Big Cottonwood Canyon and learn how they have special adaptations to make life in the mountains work. Monday-Thursday 8:30-3 and Friday 8:30-12:30

*June 27-July1 Forest Fun! Explore the wildflowers, hike through the trees, breath the fresh air, and celebrate the forest. This week we will focus on movement- a great week for kinesthetic learners and kids who like to move! Monday-Thursday 8:30-3 and Friday 8:30-12:30

July 5-8 (Short week for Independence Day) Spanish Language in Nature This is a week focused on learning the vocabulary of nature in Spanish. Great for those looking for an introduction to the language, exploring some Spanish speaking cultures, and links to nature. Tuesday-Thursday 8:30-3 and Friday 8:30-12:30

*July 11-15 Nature’s Artists Nature is an artist, too! This week kids will practice seeing, collecting, and creating visual art! Kids will be encouraged to listen to the sounds of nature and even create instruments to round out the artist in us all. Monday-Thursday 8:30-3 and Friday 8:30-12:30

July 18-22 Native Americans Learn how tribes, like the Shoshone and Utes, lived in Big Cottonwood Canyon and what life is like today. Explore plants, food, water, and fun! Monday-Thursday 8:30-3 and Friday 8:30-12:30

July 25-29 Tree Week featuring an afternoon with TreeUtah Come hug a tree or two with us! Learn how these amazing plants communicate with each other, keep our air and water clean, and maybe even rescue a seedling in need of a little extra help. TreeUtah will join us to teach about their program and keeping our forests full of trees! TreeUtah “works with students, municipalities, local businesses, community groups, and volunteers to plant trees in public spaces throughout the state. [They] plant trees of all types and sizes to make Utah a greener place to live, work, and play.” https://treeutah.org/ Monday-Thursday 8:30-3 and Friday 8:30-12:30


What to Bring and Wear

We recommend checking the weather for the day!

  1. Packed Lunch and Snacks! Pack more than usual as kids get hungry being outside all day
  2. Water bottle, refillable.
  3. Sunscreen
  4. Close-toed shoes (Hiking boots are great! Waterproof footwear for the first few weeks of June is a bonus)
  5. Backpack
  6. Hat
  7. Sunglasses
  8. Weather dependent layering- check weather to see if a jacket, raincoat, wind layer, or sun-shirt are needed for the day.
  9. Change of clothes, extra socks, and a second pair of shoes or rain boots (in a small separate bag that we can keep in our building for the week)

Allergies, medications, and special concerns

Please email engelmannmtschool@gmail.com for any allergies your child might have, medications your child takes, or special behavioral, learning, or physical concerns.


Refunds

If you cancel your registration more than 7 days before the start of the week, you will be refunded that full amount of the week less a $25 nonrefundable fee.

Cancellations within 7 days of the camp will not be refunded.


Registration

Once you have registered your child, we will send payment information via email. Full payment is due by May 15, 2022 to secure your spot.
